Today we are off to Potes. It is a 2 hour drive through the mountains. Potes is one of the most attractive towns in northern Spain. It is surrounded by spectacular mountains and where many rivers and streams meet. Just a short walk (really uphill) is the monastery of Santo Toribio de Liebana. The monastery holds and venerates part of the Lignum Crucis discovered in Jerusalem by Saint Helena of Constantinople, which is claimed to be the largest piece held.
Every year when April 16 which is the day of Saint Toribio, falls on a Sunday is declared a holy year and the holy door is open for pilgrims to pass through. Luckily 2023 is such a year.
After we left the monastery every when downhill and I mean that in the best way possible. Downhill good. Uphill hard.
Once back at our hotel we did a bit of shopping. You might notice me sporting a new more light weight new “sombrero”. Then it was off to supper and a lovely walkabout and to bed.
