Day 3 - Bilboa

After an early breakfast in a nearby bar we met our Get Your Guide tour guide for a tour of Gaztelugatxe, Gernika, and Mundaka.  One hours drive from Bilboa we visited the hermitage of San Juan de Gaztelugatxe which is known today because parts of Game of Thrones was filmed there.   The hermitage dedicated to St. John the Baptist is connected to the mainland by a man made bridge.  At the first and top step there is an imprint of a footstep said to belong to St. John.  As you go up you are to put your foot in the imprint and you will be cured of all your ailments.   There are at least 200 steps up to the church.  It was a climb but well worth it at the top.  We also visited Mundaka which is an estuary and has some of the best surfing in the world.  Our last stop was at Gernika where we learned a lot about the Basque Country. Guernica, near Bilbao, is the symbol of Basque glory and the subject of a painting by Pablo Picasso inspired by the massacre there during the Spanish Civil War.

Our guide was kind enough to drop us off at the Guggenheim Museum as we had 4 pm tickets to enter and our time was tight   We grabbed a quick beer and pizza and went into the museum.  We toured and exhibit by Yayoi Kusama  which was recommended by Chica Moira   It was very interesting.   After the museum it was off to a sport store to buy hiking poles for our walk.   We had supper at the same restaurant and I ordered the same meal.   It was still delicious.
